Cyber Espionage
Cyber Espionage also known as cyber spying can also be termed Industrial Spying or Industrial Espionage. Spying is not limited to governments, governments spy on their enemies while public and private organizations spy on their competitors. Traditionally, Cyber Espionage is a practice of spying or using spy personnel to gather information about strategies, plans, or activities of a foreign state or an organization’s competitiveness. However, cyber spies are highly skilled hackers who are hired by governments or companies and these hackers are highly paid depending on the assignment given to them. Reportedly, almost all hackers use Malware like Trojan and Spyware including the Spear Phishing method to carry out spy attacks on the government or organization’s systems, they also use Advance Persistent Threats (APTs) to enter attacked systems all the time and remain undetected till when they are through with their jobs.
Cyber espionage refers to the use of digital techniques to gain unauthorized access to confidential information or intellectual property for the purpose of espionage. Various types of cyber espionage methods and techniques are employed by individuals, groups, or nation-states.

- Phishing:
- Spear Phishing: Targeted phishing attacks directed at specific individuals or organizations.
- Whaling: Phishing attacks specifically targeting high-profile individuals, such as CEOs or government officials.
- Malware Attacks:
- Spyware: Malicious software designed to gather information from a computer or network.
- Trojan Horses: Malware disguised as legitimate software that, once installed, allows unauthorized access or control.
- RATs (Remote Access Trojans): Malware that enables remote control of a system.
- Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs):
- Long-Term Campaigns: Coordinated and prolonged cyber campaigns to infiltrate and gather data over an extended period.
- Custom Malware: Specially crafted malware tailored for specific targets.
- Zero-Day Exploits:
- Exploiting Unpatched Vulnerabilities: Utilizing software vulnerabilities that are not yet known to the vendor or public.
- Watering Hole Attacks:
- Compromising Trusted Websites: Targeting websites frequently visited by the intended victims to infect their systems.

- Targeting Software Supply Chains: Compromising the software supply chain to insert malicious code into legitimate software updates.

These types of cyber espionage methods can be used independently or in combination to achieve the goals of the attacker, whether they are seeking economic, political, or military advantages. Cybersecurity measures, including robust defense mechanisms and employee training, are essential to mitigate the risks associated with cyber espionage.
According to United Kingdomβs organization, namely UK Government Code and Cipher School (GCCS), this organization estimates and declared that there are more than 35 countries that are having highly skilled and well-funded cyber espionage teams of professionals.
Countries with high and concentrated cyber espionage teams are as follows:
North Korea: North Korea has more than 6,000 hackers in their military force supporting 5 other Asian countries in conducting attacks on America and other countries.
China: China has world-popular hacker groups known as Leviathan or Periscope comprising of thousands of professionals currently targeting American marine forces linked to the South China sea and some routes.
Vietnam: In Vietnam, there is well-funded cyber espionage called Ocean Lotus, their focus is on foreign corporations with interests in Vietnamβs industries.
Nigeria: The Nigerian Federal Government has brought charges against two Germans, one American, and a Nigerian before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges are related to alleged violations of the Official Secrets Act. The accused individuals, Judith Asuni (American), Florian Alexander Orpitx, Andy Lehmann (Germans), and Danjuma Saidu (Nigerian), have been formally arraigned on seven counts. The charges include conspiring to commit a felony by entering a protected place, taking photographs of things situated therein, and violating Section 8(1) of the Official Secrets Act, as outlined in Cap 335, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990. The potential punishment for these offenses is specified under Section 7 of the Act. Protecting against cyber espionage requires a multifaceted and proactive approach, as it often involves sophisticated and targeted attacks. Here are some key measures to enhance protection from cyber espionage:
