Man-in-the-middle Attack
A man-in-the-middle attack is a type of cyber attack whereby an attacker positions himself in a conversation between two computer users (or a user and an application) in a network. The attacker impersonates two users and captures information that the two users were trying to send to each other. A man-in-the-middle attack is when a malicious person in a particular network has successfully positioned himself in the middle of communication and is able to intercept (view, capture or modify) whatever data is communicated between two users.
The malicious purpose of a man-in-the-middle attack is to steal confidential information, such as bank login details, online account details, credit card numbers and email id and login passwords. Information stolen during a man-in-the-middle attack could be used for many purposes that may include identity theft, illegal fund transfers, payment with stolen credit cards, etc.
A Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attack occurs when a third party intercepts and potentially alters the communication between two parties without their knowledge. Various techniques are used to execute these attacks. The major methods used in Man-in-the-middle are Network sniffing or Eavesdropping that happen when a hacker positions himself into a communication session between people or systems.
Here are some types of Man-in-the-Middle attacks:
- Packet Sniffing:
- The attacker intercepts unencrypted network traffic to capture sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords.
- DNS Spoofing:
- The attacker manipulates the Domain Name System (DNS) responses, redirecting users to malicious websites by providing false IP addresses.
- ARP Spoofing/Poisoning:
- The attacker sends fake Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) messages to associate their MAC address with the IP address of a legitimate user, intercepting traffic intended for that user.
- SSL Stripping:
- The attacker downgrades a secure HTTPS connection to an unencrypted HTTP connection, making it easier to capture sensitive information.
- Session Hijacking:
- The attacker steals an active session token, allowing them to impersonate the victim and gain unauthorized access to sensitive data.
- Wi-Fi Eavesdropping:
- The attacker sets up an unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot to intercept and monitor the communication between users and the network.
- Email Hijacking:
- The attacker gains unauthorized access to email accounts, intercepting and potentially altering emails.
- HTTP Session Hijacking:
- The attacker intercepts and takes over an existing HTTP session, gaining unauthorized access to a user’s account.
- Bluetooth Hacking:
- The attacker exploits vulnerabilities in Bluetooth connections to intercept and manipulate data being transferred between devices.
- Rogue Devices:
- The attacker introduces a rogue device into a network, capturing or manipulating data passing through it.
- Malicious Browser Extensions:
- The attacker tricks users into installing malicious browser extensions that capture sensitive information during online activities.
- NFC Spoofing:
- The attacker intercepts or alters Near Field Communication (NFC) transmissions between devices to gain unauthorized access to data.
Mitigation strategies against Man-in-the-Middle attacks include using encrypted communication channels (such as HTTPS), employing secure and authenticated protocols, implementing strong encryption standards, and educating users about potential risks and best practices for secure communication.
A man-in-the-middle attack involved three parties. The victim (usually any user in the same network), another computer user or an application or server to which the victim is trying to communicate, and the “man in the middle,” (malicious person) who is intercepting the victim’s communications.
Protection Against Man-in-the-Middle Attacks:
- Encryption:
- Use strong encryption protocols, such as HTTPS, to secure communication channels and protect data in transit.
- Public Wi-Fi Caution:
- Avoid accessing sensitive information on public Wi-Fi networks to reduce the risk of interception.
- Secure Wi-Fi Networks:
- Use secure and password-protected Wi-Fi networks to prevent unauthorized access.
- Digital Certificates:
- Employ digital certificates to validate the authenticity of websites and ensure secure connections.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
- Implement MFA to add an extra layer of protection, making unauthorized access more difficult.
- Network Segmentation:
- Segment networks to limit exposure, minimizing the impact of a successful Man-in-the-Middle attack.
- Secure DNS:
- Use secure DNS protocols to prevent DNS spoofing and ensure accurate resolution.
- VPN Usage:
- Utilize Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to create encrypted tunnels for secure communication.
- Email Encryption:
- Encrypt email communications, especially when sharing sensitive information.
- Regular Security Audits:
- Conduct regular security audits and penetration testing to identify and address vulnerabilities.
- Security Awareness:
- Train users to recognize signs of phishing and other social engineering tactics commonly used in Man-in-the-Middle attacks.
- Device Security:
- Keep devices and software updated to patch vulnerabilities that could be exploited in attacks.
- HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS):
